Bill Passes Texas House

The Texas House passed House Bill 8 by a vote of 118 to 23. Among other things, the bill would expand the death penalty to repeat child sex offenders, even if no life is taken. The bill is also known as "Jessica's Law"

Our main topic of study and action in 2007 has been the abolition of the Death Penalty in Texas, though we also continue our efforts to end the war now, and for just immigration reform.
Since February 7, we hold a prayer vigil to protest the death penalty each time an execution is scheduled in Texas. A white cross with name and date is added at each successive execution. We try to publicize these vigils through all the local parishes and are pleased that people are joining us.
We are in the process of gathering names for a petition for a moratorium to the death penalty in Texas.
A “second annual” day of reflection and prayer is planned for March. Local peace-activist, Father Armand Mathew, OMI, will lead us in reflecting on nonviolence. Participants will be invited to make or renew the vow of nonviolence in the context of the Eucharist. A shared meal will be part of the day.
By the end of March we will have given three-minute pulpit-talks about Pax Christi after Sunday Masses in three city parishes. Posters with Pax Christi flyers “for the taking” are then placed in these churches.
